The EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate was originally used by the Imperial Navy, to protect convoys from Rebel starfighters. It, however, is more famously known for its extensive use by the Rebel Alliance.

The Nebulon-B was designed and introduced by Kuat Drive Yards as an Imperial counter-insurgency ship and was designed to defend convoys against raids by Rebel starfighters as current Imperial ships, like the expensive Imperial-class Star Destroyer, were considered too important for menial escort duties. The Rebel Alliance acquired a number of these ships through defection, capturing them in battle, or by outright theft and they saw extensive use for a variety of roles within the Rebel fleet.

The frigate was known and respected for its efficiency against fighters and bombers, and its anti-fighter assignment in Imperial convoys had an immediate impact, causing the Rebels to reconsider their hyperspace raids after suffering irreplaceable losses in fighters and pilots. They were also often used to support larger capital ships, such as Imperial-class Star Destroyers and Rebel Mon Calamari Star Cruisers.

When the New Republic was formed the Nebulon-B continued its service faithfully within their fleet.
